Training as a motor vehicle mechatronics technician
In our training series, we present all the training professions at the LZPD NRW. Today we are looking at the apprenticeship to become a motor vehicle mechatronics technician. Apprentice Christian Voigt is 20 years old, lives in Lünen-Alstedde and is in his third year of training.

?What do you learn as a prospective automotive mechatronics technician?

The tasks are very varied. On the one hand, you are still a #mechanic who replaces wearing parts, repairs damage to the bodywork or checks the vehicle for roadworthiness. However, general inspection and maintenance now also includes the electronics installed in the vehicle. It is becoming increasingly important for the profession of automotive mechatronics technician. That's why we prospective #mechatronics technicians are also increasingly trained in electrical systems and high-voltage technology as part of their training.

What do you particularly enjoy about your apprenticeship?

The knowledge that I face new tasks every day is what makes the job so interesting. It's fun to take on a vehicle, do a short test drive and then go troubleshooting. You should always be aware of the responsibility that a mechatronics technician has when working on vehicles. The thrill and the challenge is to return the car to full working order at the end of the day. That sometimes makes the whole thing really exciting.

And what prerequisites did you have to bring with you for the apprenticeship?

In addition to the compulsory school requirements (at least secondary school leaving certificate 10b), an interest in automotive technology is the most important thing. If you have an interest and some prior knowledge when you start your apprenticeship, that's almost half the battle. Of course, manual dexterity and the ability to work in a team are also important skills that make a good automotive mechatronics technician. In the end, the most important thing is to enjoy #wrenching and having fun at work!
